Nathalie Emmanuel
Nathalie Joanne Emmanuel was born on March 2, 1989. Emmanuel began her acting career in theatre in the late 1990s. She was featured in parts in West End musicals like The Lion King. She began her acting career in 2006 as Sasha Valentine, a soap opera. Following that she was cast in numerous British TV shows and the sequel Maze Runner. Her mother is Dominican, as is her father, who is half-Saint Lucian and half English descent. Her older brother is also a member of the family. Emmanuel remembers that her mom was the first to notice her love for acting while she was a student at St Hilda's School. It closed in 2014. The Westcliff High School For Girls grammar school followed. She claimed that she first realized her love for acting when she was just three years old. Her mother advised her to enroll in dancing, singing, and acting classes. In the West End production of The Lion King, Young Nala played the character of Young Nala. The next year she was made a part in Game of Thrones as Missandei Daenerys Targaryen's interpreter. She told Jimmy Kimmel that she learned about the character in her job as an assistant at an apparel store. In 2015, Emmanuel was promoted to an ongoing cast member on the show. Missandei was the sole woman of color on the show's cast. The scene in which she died while she was in chains wasn't popular with viewers. Emmanuel later said to The Guardian that the reaction to Missandei’s death was so intense because she was the only one. I'm sure that many who felt excluded or marginalized were influenced by Missandei or felt that they were represented by her. It was incredibly difficult for people to see her leave, especially when it happened in the manner that she was treated. They're going after the only woman of color.
